The Web Grows Up
The Internet - or more accurately the World Wide Web - was created in 1990 by a group of computer scientists led by Sir Tim Berners Lee at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland. 2008 will mark the 18th anniversary of the World Wide Web. For those of you not paying attention - we choose our next U.S. President in 2008.
The Web Generation
An entire generation of citizens have grown-up utilizing the Internet as their primary means of communication, information, and education. New "web-only" 18 year olds will be of voting age in 2008 - along with voters in their 20's too young to remember a time "pre-web". For the rest of us, usage of the web grew faster than preceding technologies like television and telephones. The Internet is important to this election. So, who is the real front-runner for President according to users of the Internet?
Let's ask Google.
Google Trends
This isn't an endorsement of Google. Google's chief competitors for search include Yahoo & Microsoft who are doing amazing things also. This isn't an endorsement of Ron Paul. Our job at Green Bay Net is to introduce you to resources that make your Internet usage more useful and enjoyable. Google Trends is one such tool - and it's free.
Google Trends allows you to track search results against other search results. It also lets you compare search results to web news coverage.
Power To The People?
We bring up the case of Ron Paul because it demonstrates Google Trends - and elections always get people thinking and talking. The first link below is that it shows how popular "Ron Paul" is as a search term. It demonstrates a comparison to the front-running candidates of both parties Clinton, Giuliani, Obama, and Romney (alphabetically - fair and balanced). Paul has been on the top quite consistently since July of 2007. Notice the correlation - or more accurately lack of correlation - to media coverage of Ron Paul.
Ron Paul has raised as much money as most of his Republican counter-parts, has the 40th all-time most popular YouTube "channel", and he scores high on Google Trends.
